Define Normal

Define Normal, by Julia Anne Peters, is about two teenage girls named Jasmine, (Jazz), and Antonia, (Tone), who thought they were completely different but learned that they are a lot more alike than they thought. In this book Jazz is a punk rock girl who smokes and has tattoo's. Tone is a good girl with perfect grades and never touched a cigarette  When they both sign up for peer counselling they're two worlds collide finding things they never thought possible. Tone finds out that Jazz is rich and she hates her mom. She also finds out that Jazz Luther plays the piano. Jazz finds out that Tome has younger brothers and she is really poor. When Tone's mother is found in a hotel really drunk she needs to go through treatment Jazz's mother takes her and her brothers in and they become closer than ever. Meanwhile, while staying at Jazz's house Tone persuades her to play a piano concert, but the catch is she has to wear a dress. That isn't Jazz's style either. In the end Jazz plays the recital in her dress and nails it, and Tone gets her mother back and they remain best friends.

One of the main themes is that people aren't what they seem but if you try to open yourself up then you could be closer with someone you never thought possible. An example of this is when Tone was staying at Jazz's house she didn't trust her but she let Jazz in and Jazz helped her get over her mom. Another example of this is when Tone let Jazz teach her how to swim. The last example of this is when, after Tone's mom got out of treatment she thought she could never trust her mom again but her mom changed and they were closer than ever. The theme of this book is that if you open yourself up to people you never thought you would, those could be your strongest relationships.

I would recommend this book to other 7th graders because I believer you can learn a lot from this book. There isn't a squeal to this book but I would read it if there was. I would recommend it to girls only because it has a lot to do with girl problems. I think it's really good because it gives you a very good life lesson! Therefore, I would defiantly recommend this book.
